Man way a day at Relevant Church. First of all I want to say how much I love our church. I truly believe that I have the privledge of serving with some of the most incredible people. Worship was off the chain this morning. We are seeing what God is bringing to our church and it is really exciting!
Here are few thoughts on this morning’s service:
- We had the honor of praying for all of our students and teachers. This was an awesome time of blessing the kids for this school year.
- We also had an opportunity to pray over the filled backpacks that we purchased to give to Hornets Nest Elementary school. This is such a great opportunity to give back to the community. There are some kids that are really going to be blessed with the backpacks and supplies.
- Our message on scheduling margin was challenging and timely. Learning to have margin in our lives when it relates to our schedules is crucial to our walk.
- We need to realize that we are, by nature, out of alignment and need to daily re-align ourselves to what God is saying. Doing this first thing in the morning is the best way this can happen.
- Dont’ be NORMAL, be WIERD.
Overall, today was completely amazing, and I am proud to be apart of what God is doing at Relevant.

This weekend at Relevant we are diving into a new series called Margin. This series is inspired by a series done at Lifechurch.tv and Pastor Craig Groeschel. The idea is that many of us are living at an unbiblical pace, and if we do not some how create margin in our lives, we will miss out on the most important things in life.
Over the next few weeks, starting this Sunday 8-15-2010, we will learn what God says about creating margin in the areas of finances, our schedules, and morally. So join us this Sunday as we learn how to create Margin.

The birth of Relevant Church took over 5 years to see happen. Being new to Lead Pastoring, I was not sure of what church planting held. What I have discovered over the last 5 years has helped me prepare for what God had in store. Here are 5 things that I would recommend to anyone new to ministry.
#1 – Know that God has called you – This may seem obvious, but it is the most important. Knowing that God has called you into the ministry as your profession is key in staying to course. When things don’t go the way you planned, and trust me there will be times when this happens, it is in the “knowing” that you are anchored. If He has called you, write it down, make a video, just do something so that when times get tough you can go back to the calling.
#2 – Surround yourself with seasoned ministers – This is crucial for young ministers. Just like Timothy had Paul, we all need people we can call upon for advice or just to vent. A mentor is a huge help when you are at a place and need Godly counsel.
#3 – Read, Read, Read – I cannot stress this enough. Get every book that you can get your hands on and begin to devour them. If you are church planting, then find some great church planting resources. If you are a new children’s pastor, then find all the books you can and read. The other subject is leadership. If you are in ministry, then you are a leader. You must begin to take your leadership to the next level.
#4 – Take Risks – Some of you that are reading this may think that I am crazy. That’s ok. I am not a risk taker by nature, but know that if your ministry is going to grow and be effective for the Kingdom of God, then you need to think outside of the box and take risks. Find something that no one in your community is doing and ask God to show you what to do. When He does, step out.
#5 – Pray – Last but certainly not least. Your new posture in life should be on your face praying for guidance. Prayer is our lifeline to God. This is where He speaks and where He changes us. Don’t get to busy “doing” ministry and forget about the One who called you.

Recently, my family and I went on vacation and spent some time at the beach. I am a lover of the ocean and being in the water, and my oldest son takes that trait from me. As we were out there the waves kept crashing in. They were really good waves for being on the Atlantic side of the world. The one thing that I consistantly experienced was the force of the undertow. This is where the waves are crashing toward the beach and the last wave is receeding back to the ocean. Many times the undertow was really forceful.
This got me thinking about how the undertow relates to sin. Now follow me here. When my son and I were playing in the ocean we were having a blast. The waves looked great and were fun to play in, but the danger that was below the surface was more than we anticipated. This is like sin. When we are enticed by our sinful nature, things look cool and fun on the surface, but the reality is there is a huge danger waiting below the surface.
For surfers, the undertow is a dangerous thing. When they crash the waves push them down and the undertow keeps them down. This is where many of them drown. Sin in itself can push us down and keep us down spiritually, emotionally, and physically to a point where we drown.
The only way out is through Jesus. He is our life preserve in the sea of sin that we face. He can pull you out and help you walk away for whatever sin is pulling you down. Trust in Him.

Over the next few weeks we at Relevant are taking a hold of a God sized goal. We are collecting school supplies for some kids in our area that do not have the ability to get what they need. Looking at where we are in the north Charlotte area, we are looking at a school that has 75% of the attendance on a free lunch program. Many of these families are struggling to make ends meet and the reality is that if the decision comes to keep the lights on or buy the pencils, they very well will have to choose the former.
Our desire and vision is to outfit 100 students with the supplies they need to start the school year right. For us this is a huge vision. This means raising upwards of 3000 dollars worth of school supplies.
This is where you come in. We NEED YOUR HELP! We are not going to be able to see these kids geared up for school without you.
Just think back to when you were in school and how excited you were to open up your new supplies for a new year. This is what you cold help us do for a ton of other kids.
So here are the details:
We need YOU to GIVE! You can go to our website and click on the donate button to give. It takes about 30 dollars to get the supplies that a child needs. Supplies like pencils, paper, markers, glue, etc.
The second thing you can do is buy the supplies and bring them to one of our Sunday services. Here are the links to the 2 schools we are partnering with.
Long Creek Elementary
Hornets Nest Elementary
If you can’t wait to give then just click this donate button and help us make a huge difference.
